LAKEVIEW SHEEPMAN POISONED
Dennis Daugherty Has a Narrow Escape From Agonizing Death

DOG KILLED BY BAIT

Sheep Tender in Desert Country Found Just In Time After Accidentally Swallowing Strychnine

Coyote poison which brought an agonizing death to one of his dogs, almost snuffed out the life of Dennis Daugherty in the desert country the first of the week. Daugherty is a sheep tender employed by John L. O' Conner.
One of the sheep dogs had a accidentally picked up a piece of poisoned bait generously sprinkled with strychnine. a few minutes later it was in convolutions,
Daugherty ran to his faithful dog and ministered to it as best he could, Believing tobacco to be a antidote, he crammed a generous helping down the dog's throat.
In spite of the efforts of Daugherty however, the dog died a few minutes later. After working over the dog Daugherty washed his hands thinking this would wipe away all trace of the poison.
Some time later he put his fingers in his mouth to whistle to the other dogs, and moment later, he too, was in convulsions. Apparently some of the strychnine crystals had remained beneath his fingernail and the poison was taken into his system when he whistled for his dogs.
After being semiconscious for some time Daugherty revived and started back for sheep camp. Three more times he fell to the ground, half conscious and in convulsions, before other employees noticed his predicament and rushed to his assistance.
The ailing sheepherder was brought into Lakeview for medical attention. His conditioin was so much improved that he was able to return to his sheep camp a day later.
